College Recruiting Seminar at Heritage a Big Success

Charlie Adams, Senior National Speaker for the NCSA Recruiting Network, conducted a college recruiting informational seminar on October 25 at Heritage and shared invaluable information with many Heritage athletes and their parents.  Mr. Adams talked about specific athletes and their personal stories of triumphs and disappointments.  He also emphasized the importance of pre planning and realistic athlete evaluation.
In a follow up e-mail, Mr. Adams offers further insight and analysis on two college athletes who recently shared a panel discussion with him at Warren Central High School.  Current Butler University soccer player, Cara Burchett, and recently graduated Northern Illinois University football player, Jason Onyebuagu, convey information that families with athletes in all sports can learn from.
Cara Burchett is a senior defender for the Butler soccer team.  She has started every game this season, and except for a stress fracture her junior season, has played a lot during her college career.  Here's what Cara had to say about recruiting:  "I have played soccer since I was 3 years old. I have always wanted to be a college soccer player. My sister played Division 3 soccer. I was fortunate to play for a great Club Soccer team (Carmel Crossfire). Club is very important. We went to big Showcases in Las Vegas and Walt Disney World. There were a lot of college coaches there, but I wasn't getting letters from them after going to those events. I learned that you have to have ways to put yourself out there so they know to look for you.  I really wanted to play Division 1 soccer. There were schools like Indiana University and Mid American Conference (MAC) schools recruiting me.  IU was too big.  I do well with more personalized instruction, where a Professor could sit down with me after a class.  Ball State was not a fit.  There was just something about Butler University that was right.  My parents always said pick a school that if you can't play your sport you will still love.  It is important to ask a lot of questions on your visits.  You can sit in on classes. Those things are important."
CHRALIE ADAMS’ ANALYSIS:  Cara was a 2 time All State Soccer player, 4 year varsity letter winner, played on a state championship Club team, and yet she didn't get much response after going to Vegas and Orlando. College coaches, although open to 'discovering' kids if someone does something amazing right in front of them when they walk by, were primarily there to evaluate prospects on their lists. Cara learned that she had to be more proactive in the game of recruiting. An athlete that has a profile with all their accomplishments can contact college coaches, let them know their playing schedule, and get them access to their online profile. Cara became much more proactive in getting her information out to college coaches before Showcase events, so they made sure to spend time watching her play in person at those events.
In today's world of recruiting, many coaches use NCSA to build their recruiting lists. Having an online profile there also enables athletes to reach out to specific coaches, let them know their schedule, and then send them a link to all their athletic and academic accomplishments on their profile.

Like Cara, Jason Onyebuagu had been a standout athlete at Warren Central High School.  He was named  team football captain, first team Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference, first team Indianapolis Star Super Team and 2005 Mr. Football Position Award (O-line), and first team Associated Press Class 5A All-State on 14-1 league and state champions as a senior.  He was a 4 year Honor Roll student.  Here is what he had to say:
"I didn't realize what the recruiting process was all about; I landed in it.  Young athletes ask me about recruiting.  I say 'enjoy it,’ the fact that someone wants you.  A lot of people get frustrated.  I was a football-everything kid!  Academics, though, came first.  I always looked at it that if I wanted to play football, I had to have good grades.  However, for the ACT and SAT, I went in unprepared.  Thankfully my core GPA was high. I got into Northern Illinois with a 19 ACT.  As far as my decision making process, I was good at football.  However, I was the good football player that didn't look good on paper.  I never had that height that looked good on paper (he would grow to be 6'1" and 308 pounds).  I never let that get me down.  I had a lot of offers.  Going to Northern Illinois University was the best decision of my life.  I enjoyed every second of it.  Before going, my father sat me down and talked about the importance of getting a degree.  I graduated early, in 3 1/2 years.  I remember when I took my visit to Northern Illinois. It was very cold.  After conversing with the coaches, I decided to commit.  I wanted to go to a place where I would have a chance to play early (Oneyebuagu would go on to be a 4 year starter at Center for NIU and make First Team all Mid American Conference).  Even after committing, other schools recruited me.  Marshall came after me.  I took a visit up there to West Virginia, which I felt bad about because I had told NIU I would come there.  Well, they found out about it and the NIU assistant coach that had been recruiting me came right down to school the next Monday.  That showed me they really wanted me.  It is important to go to a school where they really want you.  I had a great time playing college football.  I had a chance to make the Jacksonville Jaguars NFL roster, but didn't make it. My college coach talked to me a lot throughout that experience, which showed me again how much he cared about me, and how NIU was a school that really wanted me.  Find out who really wants you for WHO you are rather than just what you can do for their program."
CHARLIE ADAMS’ ANALYSIS:  Great insights from Jason.  At 6' 1" his lack of height hurt him as far as being recruited by major powerhouses at the D1 level, but he said that didn't get him down.  A realistic evaluation for him was a D1 program such as Northern Illinois (there are different levels of D1).  As a result, he played major minutes all 4 years and said he loved every second of college.  Did you notice he got his degree in 3 1/2 years?  He didn't let college sports take advantage of him.  He worked hard as a player and as a student.  His pro aspirations ended quickly, but because he emphasized education while playing college football, he has a degree and a bright future.  Sadly, many knuckleheads in college football take classes that keep them eligible, finish without a degree, get cut from the NFL, and go out into the world without a completed degree.
His point about finding the college where they really want you is big as well. When I speak, I emphasize finding the "right fit." A school that really wants you for who you are as a person, and not just an athlete, is a right fit.

Jason is now in coaching and has the credentials to build a successful coaching career.  Don't be surprised to see this young man go on to accomplish significant things in life.
Another important point about Cara and Jason is that Division 1 was right for them.  We often focus on the major time commitment of D1 and the pressures and all, but there are plenty of D1 kids that are fine with all of that, and have a remarkable experience.  To be a D1 athlete is a major commitment, no doubt, but Jason said he loved every second of it and Cara is having unforgettable experiences at Butler. Their young Butler team just won the conference regular season soccer championship and they will host the conference tournament - memories she will have for a lifetime.  This season they upset Milwaukee on the road, something no Horizon League team had been able to do in over 12 years.  In that game Cara was given the challenge of defending Milwaukee's Sarah Hagen the entire game.  Hagen is the 2-time Horizon Conference Player of the Year.  Cara did her job as Butler won 1-0.
20 years from now, Cara will have the gratifying feeling of knowing she was a college athlete.  She will be able to reflect on the incredible pressure of defending a big time college star, and succeeding!  Cara had one crack at the recruiting process, and she found the right fit.
If you have any questions about recruiting, Charlie Adams can be reached at the email below.

Eagles Lose Heartbreaker to Cardinal Ritter

Our football team lost a heartbreaker to rival Cardinal Ritter 55-20 on Friday night.  The Eagles fought hard but could not prevail against the Raiders.  Some bright spots on the night were Anthony Warrum with 128 yards receiving and 1 touchdown.  Warrum also had 120 kick return yards on the night. Brendon Burke scored a late touchdown on a lateral from Anthony Warrum at the 5 yard line going in; recording Burke’s first touchdown of the year.   CJ Stein led the defense in tackling with 13 on the night. A tough loss for the Eagles on Friday, but they look to rebound this week on the road against a very good Shenandoah team in round 1 of Sectional play.  Come out this week and support your Eagles.  With a win on Friday night at Shenandoah the Eagles would play host to Union County on October 29th.

Boys Soccer Team Honors Seniors and Shuts Out Park Tudor

The senior class, led by captains Evan Link and Connor Richards, was
determined to not allow Park Tudor to score. Evan Link played very
well in goal, and Connor Richards and Daniel Shake anchored a defense
that earned its fifth shut out of the season. Seniors Brad Giannini,
Zander Faidley, and Joey Winkle also contributed with positive
minutes. The offense had a few quality opportunities to score, but the
back of the net could not be found resulting in a tie game.

Coach Nelson was very proud of how the seniors played. "The seniors were
dialed in for this game, and it was apparent that they were determined
not to lose." The younger players played well in honor of the seniors.
Overall, it was a good result against a quality opponent.

The team's record now stands at 3-5-4. The next game will be on
Thursday, September 23rd at Greenwood Christian. Go Eagles!

Athletic Handbook and Athlete Code of Conduct Revised

The Heritage Christian High School Athletic Department has revised the Student-Athlete Code of Conduct and Athletic Handbook, which has been reviewed by the HCS Leadership team and approved by the Board of Directors. The new Code of Conduct will be effective October 15, 2010. Student athletes participating in any sport will be required to read, understand and agree to be held by the expectations contained therein. Information contained in the new Code is being disseminated to student athletes in team meetings by coaches and via the HCS Athletic Website (under forms) among other means.

The Code of Conduct is part of the overall revision to the Athletic Handbook, which can be found on the Athletic Website. Highlights of significant changes to the policy include:
• Direct linkage to High School discipline policy
• Introduction of “Type A” and “Type B” offenses
• Higher level of disciplinary action for “Type A” offenses
• Eliminate any reference to “self report” or “non-self report”
• Significant changes in appeals process
• Inclusion of hazing and locker room policies (found in Athletic Handbook)

In connection with our High School policy, our goal in communicating the revised Code of Conduct for student athletes is to define expected student behavior and establish the procedure and process for addressing disciplinary measures. We are different at HCS, in that, our number one priority is to glorify God in everything we do. This is a tremendous responsibility, one that each of us should recognize at all times.

Eagles Continue Winning Ways

The Heritage Christian Eagles football team went on the road last Friday night to Connersville and kept up their winning ways, with a 44-6 rout over the Spartans. The Eagles rushed for 138 yards as a team and threw for 240 yards with no turnovers. Andrew Brill, Riley Pallikan, Ryan Schrock, Matt Fitzpatrick and Brendon Burke protected the quarterback and opened large running lanes all night in a dominant O-Line performance. The Eagles defense played awesome as well limiting the Spartan aerial attack to only 81 yards. Nate Canfield, Brendon Burke, Matt Fitzpatrick and CJ Stein all had sacks and contributed to 30 total tackles. Heritage is ranked 6th in the state and will continue their road excursions as they travel to Beech Grove on Friday night. Beech Grove won in an upset last year at Heritage, so the Eagles are ready to get one back. We would love all fans to take the short drive over to Beech Grove and support your Eagles on the road.

BASEBALL TEAM WINS BACK TO BACK STATE TITLES

Our Heritage varsity baseball team achieved twice in a lifetime success on June 19, 2010 winning consecutive back to back State Titles. The team capped off a historic season with a 5-1 win over Delphi in the IHSAA 2A state championship game.

The Eagles were led on the mound by Sr. pitcher David Ledbetter who threw six innings of 1-hit baseball. Sr. Cam McWilliams paced the team at the plate with two hits and shut down the Delphi attack with two outstanding defensive plays in centerfield.

The victory secured back-to-back state championships for the first time in the baseball program’s history at HCS. The 2010 squad also set a school record for most wins in a season with 27. Congratulations to Ledbetter who was named first team All-State and was placed on the prestigious N/S All-Star team. David’s twin brother, Ryan Ledbetter, was also named first team All-State (short-stop).

If you are interested in ordering State Championship apparel, please contact the High School office or the Athletic Department (813-3889). Orders will be taken up to September 3, 2010.

Bergman and Teeter Receive All-American Recognition

Julie Bergman has received the high honor of being selected to the US Lacrosse All-American First Team. This recognition rarely goes to a Junior and is a significant accomplishment for Julie, our school and the acknowledgement of girl’s lacrosse in the state of Indiana.
More great news for the girl’s lacrosse team was received when Anna Teeter was selected as a US Lacrosse Academic All-American. A USL Academic All American is recognized for not only exhibiting exemplary lacrosse skills, but also representing high standards of academic achievement in the classroom (3.5 cumulative GPA or above).
Both Julie and Anna were previously named to the First Team All-State (for the second year in a row) and just finished playing on an all Kentucky/Indiana team as part of a national tournament. CONGRATULATIONS Julie and Anna on these outstanding achievements.

SENIOR ATHLETES OF THE YEAR

Each year, the Athletic Booster Club, in conjunction with the coaches and Athletic Department, awards a $1,000 scholarship to one male and one female senior athlete. Criteria for this award include; a positive Christian testimony; leadership on and off the field; athletic excellence in a sport over their High School career; and academic eligibility standards consistently met. Congratulations to Stephanie Rogers and James Houck, the 2010 Athletes of the Year!

"DOC" RICHARDS SCHOLASTIC ATHLETES OF THE YEAR

Mark “Doc” Richards continues to impact the lives of Heritage students five years after losing his battle with cancer. Doc was a Heritage parent and former Heritage girls’ basketball and boys’ tennis coach. While he was passionate about athletic excellence, he was resolute about academic achievement. We continue to honor his memory by naming two outstanding athletes who have also committed themselves to academic distinction. Congratulations to Keegan McSweeney and Chris Bosma for their outstanding performance both in the classroom and in the pool.

Harris and Schmidler Honored on All Academic Team

Both Adam Schmidler and Andrew Harris were honored to be selected to the All Academic team for the 2010 season. To qualify the players have to have a cumulative grade point of 3.5 or better and these 2 players were 2 of only 18 in the state to achieve this honor. We are called to be leaders on and off the field and are proud to have these two players represent us on this team. Great job!

Evan Egenolf Recognized in Two Categories on All State Team

Congratulations to Evan Egenolf who was recognized as an All State Honorable Mention team member in 2 categories ... Long Stick Middie and Face-off. Many would love to be recognized in one category, to have a recognition in 2 is very impressive but very well deserved. Congratulations Evan!

ECHOCARDIOGRAMS OFFERED

This year echocardiograms will be available for all athletes. There will be a charge of $20.00. This test will NOT be required, but may give potentially lifesaving information about the heart’s output and valve function. The test can also detect hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (abnormal thickening of the heart muscle). Some athletes, based on the findings of their yearly sports physical, will be required to have an ECG; but the vast majority will not need this test. If you want to schedule an appointment, please call 338-CARE (2273). For additional information, refer to the Echo information document on the Athletics website (click on Resource Center, forms, echo document). If you have any questions, please contact Andy Shaffer, Trainer at emailto:andy.shaffer@heritagechristian.net.
